How many times have we not done something because it made us feel uncomfortable? How many times have we set ourselves back by not taking advantage of a situation because we were too afraid of things changing? Even once is one too many times. As humans it’s normal for us to fear change and enjoy being comfortable, but as Neale Donald Walsch wonderfully put it “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”.
Breaking the Comfort Zone
Everybody has a comfort zone, but too often we get trapped in them. We don’t want to explore the possibilities of what lies ahead, because we are fine with what we already have. We can’t fall into that illusion. Much like the parable of the frog that died because he became too comfortable sitting in a pot of boiling water, so too can we be hurt by our own illusion of being comfortable.
Ashton Kutcher, #BAE, said “I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing”. Mr. Kutcher has a valid point here and it’s one we shouldn’t overlook. Growth does not happen within your comfort zone. Learning does not happen within your comfort zone. Understanding does not happen within your comfort zone. All of this happens on the outside or ‘edge’ of your comfort zone. Once you start constantly exploring what’s outside your comfort zone, you begin to enter a space of exponential growth & learning that benefits not only you, but society as a whole.
Apex Comfort Zone Challenges (CZC)
That’s why Apex’s Comfort Zone Challenges are AWESOME because they get us to do things we under ‘normal circumstances’ would never do. I say under normal circumstances because we’ve trained ourselves that normal circumstances are the times in which we are comfortable. Apex makes it so that we flip what normal means, not to what society says normal is, but to what we say normal is. Now it’s not easy by any means, but that’s what makes it so fun and rewarding! What you quickly find out, when you’re stepping outside of your comfort zone, is that there are more people rooting for you than against you. You bring those people around you closer to the edge of their comfort zone.
That’s why I challenge whoever is reading this to do their own Comfort Zone Challenge. It can be whatever you want, but make sure that it’s something that pushes you to the edge of your comfort zone. Don’t let the excuse “well I have things holding me back” hold you back! Meet someone new! Talk to that person sitting next to you on the bus! Post a YouTube video of your beautiful singing! Move to that city you’ve always dreamed of! You’ll quickly figure out when you leap from the edge of your comfort zone that the world is a much more interesting, beautiful, inspiring place than you could have ever imagined.
